Waxing Smooth legs playbook

Arms and Legs Waxing: Prep, Pain and Aftercare

The Stylist Unisex Salon · 28 September 2026 · 7 min read

It is the week before a family wedding and you are staring at your legs, wondering how long the hair actually needs to be. Too short and the wax slides off uselessly; too long and you already know it will hurt. Arms and legs are the most-booked waxing service at any salon, and also the one people prepare for worst. Here is the full playbook: prep, pain, and aftercare.

01 Prep: the 48 hours before

Hair should be roughly a quarter inch long, about a grain of rice. That is usually two to three weeks of growth after shaving. Exfoliate gently the day before so the wax reaches the hair, not the dead skin sitting on top. Skip heavy moisturisers, oils and deodorant on the day itself; product on the skin stops wax from gripping. Avoid coming sunburnt, and if you can, do not book for a day you are rushing straight to the gym. Tell the therapist about any skin condition or medication that thins the skin.

02 Pain: what it really feels like

The honest version: the first strip is the worst, because you do not know what is coming. After that it is a quick sting that fades in seconds. Legs are easier than most people expect; the under-knee and ankle areas sting more than the thighs. Arms are quick and usually milder. It gets easier with regular waxing because the hair grows back finer and sparser. Breathing out as the strip comes off genuinely helps, and so does not tensing your muscles.

First-timers often laugh after the first strip because the dread was worse than the feeling.

03 Aftercare: the 48 hours after

Wear loose clothing home. Skip hot showers, saunas, gym sessions and swimming for 24 to 48 hours; heat and sweat on freshly waxed skin invite bumps. Do not apply perfumed lotions or deodorant to waxed areas for a day. Mild redness and tiny bumps are normal and usually settle by the next morning. Start gentle exfoliation after three or four days to keep ingrown hairs away.

A light, fragrance-free moisturiser after the first day keeps the skin comfortable without clogging pores.

04 Timing it around events

Book two to three days before the event, never the same day. That buffer covers any redness and lets the skin settle properly. If it is your first wax ever, do a trial run three weeks before the big day so you know exactly how your skin reacts. For wedding-season planning, our bridal skincare timeline maps waxing into the full schedule. Men prepping for an occasion can pair it with a proper haircut in the same week and be done with everything at once.

At The Stylist Unisex Salon in Sector 52, opposite Artemis Hospital, a full arms and legs session takes about 45 minutes with an experienced therapist. Waxing starts from Rs 200; call 8178159945 for the exact quote on the areas you want.

Salon tip: Do not shave between waxes "just this once". Shaving resets the growth cycle and makes the next wax patchy and more painful. If you must tidy up, trim instead.

Questions we hear at the salon

How long should hair be before waxing?

About a quarter inch, roughly the length of a grain of rice. That is usually two to three weeks of growth after shaving. Too short and the wax cannot grip; too long and the pull hurts more. Trim long hair instead of shaving it down.

How long do waxing results last?

Clients usually enjoy smooth skin for three to four weeks before regrowth becomes noticeable. With regular waxing the hair often grows back finer and sparser, which stretches the smooth period. Shaving between sessions shortens it again. Stick with waxing and the smooth stretch gets longer.

Can I wax if I have sensitive skin?

Yes, with the right wax and an experienced therapist. Rica or other gentle strip waxes suit reactive skin better than hot honey wax. Mention your sensitivity when booking so the therapist can patch-test and choose accordingly. A quick patch test removes the guesswork.

Should I exfoliate before waxing?

Gently exfoliate the day before, not the day of. It clears dead skin so the wax grips hair properly. Exfoliating right before the appointment leaves skin raw and makes the wax sting more. Moisturise lightly after exfoliating, then skip products on wax day.
