Clean-Up vs Facial: Which One Does Your Skin Need?

The Stylist Unisex Salon · 27 September 2026 · 6 min read

Every salon menu lists both, and most clients pick by price or appointment length. That is backwards. A clean-up and a facial do different jobs: one maintains, the other treats. Book the wrong one and you either under-treat a real concern or overpay for maintenance. Here is the difference, step by step.

The short answer

A clean-up is shorter maintenance work: cleansing, exfoliation, blackhead and whitehead extraction and a mask, in 30 to 45 minutes. A facial adds massage, concentrated serums and targeted treatment steps for concerns like pigmentation, dullness or ageing, running 60 to 90 minutes. Book a clean-up for regular upkeep every 3 to 4 weeks; book a facial when your skin has a specific complaint or before an event.

01 What a clean-up includes

Cleansing, gentle exfoliation or scrub, steam, manual extraction of blackheads and whiteheads, a mask matched to your skin type, then moisturiser and sunscreen. Thirty to forty-five minutes.

The goal is a reset: clear pores, even texture, skin that breathes again. It is the skincare equivalent of a trim: regular, unglamorous, and what keeps everything else working.

02 What a facial adds

Everything in a clean-up, plus the treatment layer: a longer structured massage across face, neck and shoulders that boosts circulation; concentrated serums or ampoules aimed at specific concerns; specialised masks for brightening, hydration or firmness; and sometimes device-assisted steps depending on the facial type.

Sixty to ninety minutes. The goal is correction, not just cleanliness: pigmentation, dullness, dehydration, early fine lines. That is what the extra time and money buy.

04 Which to book when

Monthly maintenance, congested T-zone, first salon visit: clean-up. It is also the smart first booking because it shows the therapist how your skin behaves under professional products.

Dullness, pigmentation, dehydration, fine lines: facial. These are correction jobs and need the treatment layer.

Wedding in a month: facial now for the correction phase, clean-up in the final week for the polish. Our bridal skincare timeline maps this week by week.

05 How often

Clean-up every 3 to 4 weeks matches the skin's natural renewal cycle. Facials every 4 to 6 weeks, or as a short course when treating something specific. More is not better: over-exfoliation is a real and common injury, and it usually comes from enthusiasm, not neglect.

The extraction rule: a good therapist extracts only what is ready to come out. If your clean-up regularly leaves you red and scabbed, the extractions were forced. That is a standards problem, not a skin problem.

Clean-Up vs Facial questions, answered

Can I get a facial the day before an event?

A familiar, gentle facial is fine two to three days before. Never book a new facial or extractions the day before an event; even good treatments can leave temporary redness. For next-day events, a clean-up done a week prior is the safer play.

Is a clean-up enough for acne-prone skin?

For mild congestion, yes, as regular maintenance. Active, inflamed acne needs a facial with antibacterial treatment steps or a dermatologist's input; aggressive extraction on inflamed acne makes it worse, not better.

What is the right age to start facials?

There is no threshold age. Teens with congestion benefit from clean-ups; facials make sense whenever a specific concern appears, whether that is at 22 or 52.

Do men need facials?

Skin is skin. Men dealing with pollution, shaving-related ingrowns and no routine at all often see the most dramatic first-facial results. The steps are the same; the consultation adjusts for shaving and thicker skin.
