Diwali week is chaos. Card parties, office pujas, family dinners, and you want to look put-together for all of them without spending every evening at the salon. The trick is sequencing. Start ten days out and the festival itself becomes easy.
01 Ten days out: skin first
Book any facial or cleanup now, not later. Skin needs days to settle into its glow, and anything strong too close to Diwali risks redness on the day you are photographed most. Get waxing and threading done in this window too. Brows shaped ten days out still look clean on Diwali night.
Sleep and water do more than any product in the final week. Tired, dehydrated skin does not hold makeup well, and no facial fixes that overnight.
Do not forget your hands. Mehendi or no mehendi, a manicure makes a difference in every diya-lighting photo. Feet too, if you are wearing open juttis.
02 A week before: hair
This is the week for colour touch-ups and a hair spa. Roots done now grow out just enough to look natural by Diwali. A hair spa adds the shine that shows up in photos, and your hair behaves better through a week of functions. Our hair spa guide explains what the treatment actually does.
If you are growing out colour, a toner refreshes the ends without a full dye job. Ask your colourist what your hair actually needs instead of defaulting to a full colour.
03 Day-of hair: three looks that hold
Pick one look and stick with it. Changing your mind at 6 PM is how you end up rushed and unhappy. These three survive long evenings without babysitting. All three work with Indian festive wear and take under forty minutes at the salon.
- The sleek low bun: festive, secure, and it shows off jhumkas. Works through long evenings.
- Soft curls, half pinned: for when you want hair down but controlled. Pin back the front sections so they stay clear of the diyas.
- The polished ponytail: high or low, wrapped with a strand of hair. Modern, clean, and it survives dancing.
04 Day-of skin and makeup
Keep the base light. Heavy foundation plus October warmth plus diya heat is a bad combination. A tinted moisturiser or light foundation, set properly, lasts longer than a thick layer. Warm tones on eyes and lips suit diya light.
Lipstick is the first thing to fade. A stain or a long-wear formula under your regular lipstick buys you hours.
If you are doing your own makeup, prep matters more than products. Cleanse, moisturise, let it sink in for ten minutes, then start. Makeup applied on rushed, unprepped skin separates within hours. Keep blotting papers in your clutch. They do more for your photos than any touch-up powder.
Diwali week rule: Nothing new in the last five days. No new facial, no new product, no experimental haircut. Festival week is for enjoying the prep you already did.

Questions we hear at the salon
When should I get a facial before Diwali?
Ten to fourteen days before. Skin needs several days to settle into its post-facial glow, and booking early leaves room to fix any reaction. Avoid strong treatments in the last five days before Diwali. A gentle cleanup closer to the festival is fine if your skin is used to it.
What hairstyle lasts through a long Diwali party?
A sleek low bun or a polished ponytail. Both stay secure for hours, handle dancing and heat from diyas, and show off earrings. Half-pinned soft curls work if you want hair down, but pin the front sections back. Avoid fully loose styles. They fall flat fast and keep landing in the diyas.
Should I colour my hair before Diwali?
A root touch-up a week before Diwali is ideal. The colour settles into a natural look within days, and your hair still looks fresh for the festival. Do not colour two days before. Fresh colour can look harsh, and any reaction or shade issue leaves you no time to fix it before the parties begin.
How do I keep makeup from melting during Diwali?
Keep the base light and set it well. A thin layer of foundation set with powder outlasts a thick un-set layer in heat and humidity. Blot, do not pile on powder, through the evening. Warm eye and lip tones suit diya light and need less touching up than a bold red lip that fades unevenly.
