01 The one rule of fashion colour
Dark hair must be pre-lightened before any vivid shade goes on. There is no product that paints pastel pink directly onto black hair and has it show up. The lighter and cooler the target shade, the lighter the base needs to be. Pastels need a near-white canvas. Jewel tones like wine and deep blue need far less lift, which is why they are the smarter first step on Indian hair.
This is the part most Instagram reels skip. The reel shows the colour going on. It does not show the two hours of lightening that happened first, or the condition of the hair underneath.
02 Shades that flatter Indian skin
Burgundy, plum, wine, deep blue, emerald and copper red are the shades that consistently look good on Indian skin tones. They have enough depth to harmonise with warm undertones instead of clashing with them, and their dense pigment means they show up without extreme lightening.
Neons and pastels are the opposite bet. They demand the most lift, fade the fastest, and wash out into odd in-between tones within weeks. They are not bad choices, they are high-commitment choices. 03 The fade is the feature, not the bug
Most fashion colours are semi-permanent. They sit on the hair rather than inside it, which means they wash out. 04 The hidden costs nobody mentions
Check your college or workplace rules before you commit, because vivid colour is hard to hide and harder to reverse quickly. Chlorinated pools will chew through fashion shades in a single swim. And going back is its own project: you cannot simply dye dark over a faded vivid and expect it to behave, since the underlying pigment keeps influencing the result.
There is also the grow-out line. Unlike balayage, a full-head vivid grows out with a hard stripe at the roots, which means the maintenance rhythm is closer to global colour than to painted highlights.
05 Low-risk ways to try it
You do not have to start with a full head. A peekaboo underlayer hides under your top hair and flashes when you move. Coloured ends can be trimmed away if you change your mind.
