Hair Colour Aftercare: Making Your Colour Last in Hard Water and Sun
The short answer
Colour lasts longest when you wait 48 to 72 hours before the first wash, then wash 2 to 3 times a week with sulphate-free, colour-safe shampoo in lukewarm water. Gurugram's hard water and sun are the two biggest fade accelerators: protect with a filter or clarifying routine and UV cover. Refresh toner every 4 to 6 weeks; full colour every 6 to 8.
Fresh colour looks expensive. Three weeks later it can look tired, and the usual suspect is not the colourist. In Gurugram, hard water strips colour and sun bleaches it, while daily hot washes finish the job. Aftercare is what separates colour that lasts two months from colour that lasts three weeks.
01The first 72 hours
Do not wash for 48 to 72 hours after colouring. The cuticle needs time to close and lock the pigment in; early washing rinses colour down the drain before it sets. Avoid heavy sweating and swimming in this window too.
02Washing rules
2 to 3 times a week, sulphate-free colour-safe shampoo, lukewarm water. Hot water opens the cuticle and releases colour with every wash. Condition every time, focusing on lengths. Dry shampoo between washes extends the interval without a full wash cycle.
Reds and fashion shades fade fastest and need the strictest routine; browns and dark shades are more forgiving.
03Hard water: the silent fader
Mineral deposits do two things to coloured hair: they dull the shine that makes colour look rich, and they create a film that makes the shade look muddy. A monthly clarifying wash lifts the film; a shower filter prevents it. If your colour always fades fast despite good products, test the water before blaming the colour. Our hard water guide has the full routine.
04Sun protection
UV breaks down colour molecules directly, which is why hair lightens and warms in summer. A cap, scarf or UV-protectant spray for long outdoor exposure. This matters most for reds, coppers and fashion colours, and for anyone who commutes on two wheels.
05The refresh calendar
Toner/gloss: every 4 to 6 weeks to revive richness and correct brassiness. Root touch-up: every 4 to 6 weeks for global colour. Full refresh: every 8 to 12 weeks depending on fade. Toners are the unsung hero: a 20-minute gloss appointment between colours keeps hair looking freshly done.
Colour care questions
Why does my hair colour fade so fast?
The usual culprits in order: washing too often or too hot, non-colour-safe shampoo, hard water mineral film, and sun exposure. Fix the routine before assuming the colour was badly done.
Can I oil coloured hair?
Yes, lightly. Heavy oiling followed by strong shampooing to remove it strips colour faster. A light oil on the lengths a few hours before washing is the balanced approach.
Does swimming affect hair colour?
Yes, significantly. Chlorine strips colour and can tint blonde shades greenish. Wet hair with clean water and apply conditioner before swimming, wear a cap, and rinse immediately after.
How soon can I recolour faded hair?
A toner or gloss can be done any time to revive fade. Full recolouring is best spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart to avoid over-processing the lengths; roots can be touched up sooner.
