How to Brief Your Stylist (So You Get What You Asked For)

The Stylist Unisex Salon · 28 September 2026 · 6 min read

You asked for just a trim and lost four inches. Or you showed one photo of curtain bangs and got something nothing like it. Nine times out of ten the problem is not skill, it is communication. Stylists cannot read minds. Here is how to brief yours so you both mean the same thing.

01 Bring photos, plural

One photo is a wish. Three photos are a brief. Bring two or three references that show the cut from the front and the back, ideally on hair similar to yours in texture and thickness. A photo of the style on fine straight hair will not translate directly to thick curly hair, and a good stylist will tell you that. Save the photos on your phone. Screenshots are fine.

02 Say what you hate

Tell your stylist what you do not want before you describe what you do. I hate it when my layers flip out. Do not take off the length. I never want bangs. Negatives are clearer than positives because they draw the boundaries. Most bad haircuts happen inside the vague middle ground where the client said layers and the stylist heard something else.

03 Learn five words

You do not need trade jargon, but five words prevent most misunderstandings.

04 Be honest about maintenance

Be honest about your mornings. If you will not blow-dry, say so, and the cut should be designed for air-drying. If you heat-style daily, say that too, because some cuts only look right with effort. Tell your stylist which products you actually own and use. A cut that needs three products you will never buy is the wrong cut. Our men's haircut guide makes the same point for shorter hair: the best cut is the one you will maintain.

05 Tell the truth about damage

Tell the truth about your hair's history. Box dye from eight months ago, bleach under that brown, daily straightening, all of it matters. Colour and chemical services react to what is already in your hair, and surprises mid-service are how damage happens. A stylist who knows the full history can work around it. One who finds out halfway through cannot. If you are considering colour, our balayage vs highlights guide explains how to pick.

The magic sentence: Point at your reference photo and ask, will this work on my hair? A good stylist will say yes, no, or yes with changes. All three are useful answers.

A women's haircut is Rs 499 at The Stylist Unisex Salon in Sector 52, and it starts with this exact conversation. Call 8178159945 and bring your photos. We will tell you straight what will work.

Questions we hear at the salon

How many reference photos should I bring to a haircut?

Two or three. One photo is a wish; three form a proper brief. Show the cut from the front and the back, on hair similar to yours in texture and thickness. A style photographed on fine straight hair will not translate directly to thick curly hair. Save them on your phone. Screenshots are perfectly fine.

What should I tell my stylist before a haircut?

What you hate, what your mornings look like, and your hair's chemical history. Negatives draw clearer boundaries than wishes. Your real styling routine decides whether the cut will work on a Tuesday, not just on day one. And old box dye or bleach changes how colour and treatments behave, so honesty prevents damage.

Why did my haircut not look like the photo?

Usually communication, not skill. The photo may show hair of a different texture, thickness or length than yours. Or a key detail got lost: face-framing pieces versus all-over layers, for example. Asking will this work on my hair before the scissors come out catches most of these gaps. After the cut, it is too late.

Should I wash my hair before going to the salon?

For most cuts, arrive with clean, dry, product-free hair so the stylist sees its natural behaviour. For colour services, slightly unwashed hair is often better, since natural oils protect the scalp. When in doubt, ask while booking. Every salon has a preference and it takes ten seconds to check.
