Highlights weave lighter pieces through your base for dimension with a softer grow-out, needing attention every 6 to 8 weeks. For Indian hair, highlights in warm browns and caramels usually look more natural; global colour suits those wanting uniform change or full grey coverage.
Two clients ask for 'colour' and mean opposite things. One wants every strand the same rich brown. The other wants light playing through dark hair. Global colour and highlights are the two answers, and choosing wrong means either flat, high-maintenance uniformity or dimension you did not ask for. Here is how they differ.
01What global colour does
One shade, applied root to tip across the whole head. The result is uniform, rich and even: full grey coverage, a complete change from black to brown, or a refresh of faded lengths. It is the most transformative option and the most honest about what it is.
The trade is regrowth. Because every hair is coloured, new growth shows as a visible line in 3 to 4 weeks, and the whole head needs rebalancing regularly. Global colour is a commitment to the calendar.
02What highlights do
Selected strands are lightened and woven through your natural base, usually with foils for precision. The result is dimension: light and depth playing against each other, the way sun lightens hair naturally.
Grow-out is softer because the base stays natural; regrowth blurs rather than lines. Touch-ups every 6 to 8 weeks, and many clients stretch further. The trade is that highlights cannot give full grey coverage or a uniform colour change.

04Which suits Indian hair and skin
Indian hair is typically dark, thick and strong, which takes both techniques well. The deciding factor is usually the skin and the goal.
Choose global when grey coverage is the priority, when you want a visible, even change, or when your base is uneven from old colour and needs unifying.
Choose highlights when you want dimension without commitment, when your skin suits warmth (caramels, honey browns and chocolate ribbons flatter warm Indian undertones), or when you want colour that grows out gracefully.

05The upkeep maths
Global colour: root touch-ups every 3 to 4 weeks, plus toning or glossing as the lengths fade. Highlights: partial touch-ups every 6 to 8 weeks, with toners in between to keep the light pieces fresh. Over a year, highlights usually mean fewer appointments, which is worth factoring into the decision alongside the look.
Colour questions, answered
Which is less damaging, global colour or highlights?
Highlights are usually gentler overall because only some strands are lightened and the scalp is largely untouched. Global colour processes every strand including new growth each time. Both are safe on healthy hair with proper application.
Can I get highlights on grey hair?
Yes, and they work beautifully as grey blending: light pieces camouflage grey regrowth far better than a solid colour. For more than about 50 percent grey, global colour usually covers more completely.
How long do highlights last?
The lightened pieces are permanent, but they grow out and the tone fades. Plan a toner refresh every 6 to 8 weeks and a partial highlight every 3 to 4 months to keep them looking intentional.
Will global colour suit my skin tone?
Most Indian skin suits rich browns, chocolates and warm blacks. Jet black can look harsh against lighter warm skin; a dark chocolate usually flatters more. Assess the shade in daylight, not under salon spots.
