You have booked your first keratin treatment for Saturday, and now the questions are arriving. How long will you be there? Will it smell? Can you tie your hair after? Will your curls come back? Most first-timers walk in nervous and walk out wondering why they waited so long. This is the full walkthrough, so Saturday holds no surprises.
01 Before you arrive
Come with clean, product-free hair if the salon asks, though most salons wash you on arrival anyway. More important: tell your stylist your full hair history. Colour, bleach, previous keratin or smoothening, at-home straightening, all of it. Keratin on top of recent bleach needs a different approach than keratin on virgin hair. Bring reference photos of the finish you want. And eat something. You will be there a while.
02 The steps, in order
- Consultation. Your stylist looks at your hair's texture, density, and history, and confirms keratin is the right call.
- Clarifying wash. Strips buildup so the treatment absorbs evenly.
- Application. The keratin formula is brushed on in thin sections, root to tip. This is meticulous work and takes a while on thick hair.
- Processing. Usually 20 to 30 minutes while the formula soaks in.
- Sealing. Blow-dry, then a flat iron passes over small sections to seal the keratin into the hair. Expect some smell and a bit of eye-watering during this step. It is normal, and it passes.
- Cool down, rinse, and a final smooth blow-dry so you leave seeing the result.
03 How long it takes
Plan for 2.5 to 4 hours depending on your hair's length and density. Thick, long Indian hair sits at the longer end. Do not book anything tight right after. The ironing stage alone can take over an hour on dense hair, and rushing it gives a weaker result. A salon that quotes ninety minutes for waist-length thick hair is cutting corners somewhere.
04 The first 72 hours
Same rules as other heat-sealed treatments. No washing for 48 to 72 hours, no tying up, no clips, no tucking behind your ears. Keep the hair straight and untouched. If it rains, cover it. A kink that sets during this window stays.
After the waiting period, switch to sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner, and wash less frequently if you can manage it. 05 When it fades, and what comes next
Keratin lasts 2 to 4 months, fading gradually. There is no harsh regrowth line, your texture just slowly returns. Most people redo it when the frizz starts winning again. Pricing varies with hair length and density, and your stylist can quote accurately at the consultation.

Will keratin damage my hair?
Keratin itself is a conditioning treatment, but the high-heat flat ironing involved can stress already-damaged hair. On healthy or mildly frizzy hair, it is generally well tolerated. On bleached or fragile hair, the heat step needs care. A consultation and strand test are how a good salon judges whether your hair is ready.
Can I colour my hair after keratin?
Wait at least two weeks after the keratin treatment before colouring. Colouring too soon can strip the keratin and dull the colour. Ideally, colour first and do keratin after, with a week or two between them. Tell your colourist about the keratin so they can adjust the formula.
How soon can I tie my hair after keratin?
Wait the full 48 to 72 hours before tying your hair, using clips, or tucking it behind your ears. After that, tie it loosely when you need to. Tight hairstyles in the first week can still leave marks, so keep things gentle while the treatment fully settles.
Does keratin work on men's hair?
Yes, keratin works well on men's hair that is long enough to treat, usually at least a few inches. It tames frizz and makes thick, unruly hair far easier to manage. The appointment is quicker on shorter hair, and pricing is generally lower than for long, dense hair.
