Salon Hygiene Checklist: How to Spot a Clean Salon in Gurugram
The short answer
A hygienic salon uses fresh towels and capes per client, disinfects metal tools between clients, never double-dips wax sticks, uses fresh thread per client, and keeps workstations visibly clean. Red flags: reused towels, dusty tools, double-dipped wax, no patch tests, and dirty wash basins. If you spot two or more red flags on a first visit, leave.
Nobody asks about salon hygiene until something goes wrong: an infection after waxing, a reaction to a reused product, itchy scalp after a dirty basin. Hygiene is invisible when it is good and unforgettable when it is not. Here is what to check before you become a regular anywhere, including here.
01Tools
Combs, brushes, scissors and sectioning clips should be cleaned and disinfected between clients, not just wiped. Look for a disinfectant tray or UV steriliser at the station. Tools sitting in a dusty pile are tools that were not cleaned.
Blades for eyebrow or facial razors must be fresh per client, no exceptions. Ask if you do not see the wrapper opened in front of you.
02Towels, capes and basins
Fresh towel and cape per client: this is the baseline, not a luxury. Towels should smell clean, not damp. Wash basins should be rinsed between clients; hair and product residue from the previous client sitting in the basin is an instant red flag.
Floors swept between clients, workstations wiped down. A salon that looks clean usually is clean; a salon that looks tired usually is not.
03Waxing hygiene
The non-negotiables: no double-dipping (the stick that touched skin never goes back in the wax pot), fresh strips, gloves for bikini services, and skin cleansed before waxing. Double-dipping spreads bacteria between clients and is the single most common salon hygiene violation. Watch for it openly; a clean salon expects you to.
04Threading and skin services
Fresh thread per client (thread is cheap; reuse is inexcusable). Patch tests offered for new chemical services and brightening treatments without being asked. Products decanted hygienically, not finger-dipped from open jars.
05Red flags to walk away from
Reused-looking towels. Dusty or product-caked tools. Double-dipped wax. No patch test offered before colour or chemical treatments. Dirty basins. Staff who dismiss hygiene questions. Any two of these on a first visit: do not become a second-visit client.
And the meta-rule: a salon confident about hygiene answers questions gladly. Defensiveness is itself a red flag.

How do I know if salon tools are clean?
Look for a disinfectant solution or UV steriliser at the station, tools stored clean and dry rather than in a dusty pile, and fresh blades opened per client for any razor work. When in doubt, ask; clean salons answer proudly.
Is double-dipping wax dangerous?
It transfers bacteria between clients and can cause folliculitis and infections. It is the most common waxing hygiene violation. A hygienic salon uses a fresh stick for every dip, every time.
Should salons do patch tests?
Yes, before hair colour, chemical straightening, and strong brightening treatments, especially for first-time clients. A salon that skips patch tests is cutting a safety corner.
What should I do if I get an infection after a salon visit?
See a doctor promptly, and inform the salon so they can check their protocols. Do not return for correction treatments on infected skin; medical treatment comes first.
