Waxing for Beginners: What to Expect at a Salon
The short answer
A salon waxing appointment takes 20 to 45 minutes depending on the area: warm wax applied, removed with strips, followed by soothing lotion. It stings briefly and the sting fades within minutes; regular waxing hurts less as hair grows back finer. Prepare by letting hair grow to about a quarter inch and exfoliating the day before; avoid sun, heat and tight clothing for 24 hours after.
Everyone's first waxing appointment comes with the same question, asked with varying degrees of embarrassment: how much will it hurt? Followed by: what do I do, where do I look, is this awkward for the therapist? (No. They have done thousands.) Here is the complete first-timer briefing.
01What happens, step by step
You are shown to a private room and given privacy to prepare the area. The therapist cleanses the skin, applies warm (not hot) wax in sections, presses a strip, and removes it against the hair growth in one quick motion. The sting is sharp and brief, seconds per strip. Afterwards: soothing lotion or aloe, and you are done.
Full arms or legs take 20 to 30 minutes; smaller areas less. Bikini and Brazilian services take longer; ask for the specific service name when booking so there is no confusion.
02How much it hurts
The first time stings; there is no honest way around that. But three things first-timers do not expect: the sting fades within minutes, not hours; it hurts far less than the anticipation suggests; and regular waxing hurts progressively less because regrowth comes back finer and sparser.
Pain peaks on the first strip of each area and drops as the skin adjusts. Most clients describe appointment two as 'fine' and appointment five as routine.
03How to prepare
Hair length: about a quarter inch, roughly two to three weeks of growth. Too short and the wax cannot grip; too long and it pulls unnecessarily, so trim if needed.
Exfoliate the day before, not the day of. Skip heavy moisturisers on the day; wax grips clean skin best. Timing: avoid booking right before a beach day or an event; give the skin 48 hours.
04Aftercare
For 24 hours: no hot baths, saunas or intense workouts; no tight clothing on waxed areas; no sun exposure; no fragranced products. Mild redness and small bumps are normal and settle within a day. Ingrown hairs are the main long-term annoyance: gentle exfoliation twice a week between appointments prevents most of them.
05How often
Every 3 to 4 weeks matches the hair growth cycle. Stretching to 6 weeks means the hair is long enough to hurt more and the smoothness window shortens. Regularity is what makes waxing progressively easier.
First-timer questions
Is waxing better than shaving?
For longevity, yes: waxing lasts 3 to 4 weeks versus days for shaving, and regrowth is finer. For convenience, shaving wins. Waxing also exfoliates, which is why waxed skin feels smoother than shaved skin.
Can I wax during my period?
Yes, with a tampon or cup for bikini services, but expect higher sensitivity. Many clients prefer to wait a few days; there is no hygiene issue, only a comfort one.
What if I have sensitive skin?
Tell the therapist before they start. Sensitive-skin waxes (chocolate, aloe-based) pull less aggressively, and a patch test on a small area first is standard practice at good salons.
Do men get waxing services?
Yes. Chest, back and shoulder waxing are common men's services, plus nose and ear detailing. The process is identical; coarser hair may need a second pass on some areas.
